One of the most consistently amusing, off-kilter superhero comics out right now is Warren Ellis’s Nextwave, published by Marvel.
Throwing together some creations of his own (such as the foul-mouthed hero, ‘The Captain’, and the insane-beyond-insane and appropriately-named Dirk Anger) with some Marvel comics C-listers (Captain Marvel, Boom Boom, Machine Man, and Elsa Bloodstone), Ellis has given us Fin Fang Foom and his underpants, Broccoli Men, dancing Golems, and more.
Alas, it looks like it’s coming to an end, according to Ellis. Stuart Immomen’s fantastic pencilling—full of dynamic energy and zany designs—is just a bit too costly for the book to support, so rather than go for some other, more-affordable talent, Ellis has decided to pull the plug with issue #12. Ah, well, that leaves us a few more issues to enjoy the madness… until the first Nextwave limited series roles around, anyways!
