Take a Swype (or Two)

More well-sculpted shoes are always fun to see. Yesterday, I featured 2REAL’s Pure lowtops, so today I’m taking a look at House of Curios excellent—and amazingly cheap—new hightops, called Swypes.

Now, if you’ve followed my blog, one of my big complaints about some of the fantastic shoe designers out there is that they borrow far too explicitly from the real world, down to famous, trademarked logos. There’s way too many Nike swooshes and Adidas stripes in Second Life. The Swypes ... well, they’re on the edge. The name, the “swype”, kind-of sort-of invoke the famous swoosh, right? But it’s far enough away that I suppose it doesn’t violate trademarks. I would have preferred if he did something else, but all right, lets roll with it.

These shoes feature a great deal of variety—practically infinite variety, in fact, when you use the MOD versions included with the purchase which you can individually tint using the manual controls however you desire. But even with the HUD, you’ve a number of colors to choose from for various parts. One clever bit in the HUD is that there are “Random” options, which basically set the shoe to randomly determining its colors. This works terrifically if you’re feeling cheeky and want an odd-ball, mismatched pair of shoes. It’s also great if you just want to try and get a fresh color palette to tweak.

The sculpting is generally well done, but you may notice that there’s a wee spot of black on the front, where it seems the sculpts aren’t quite syncing right. I did all sorts of things—increased LOD in debug, MaxNodeSize, and so on—and it didn’t go away, so I’m supposing this is a legitimate fault in the sculpt. A shame. But, that said, it’s not something you (or anyone else) is likely to notice normally.

And for all that variety, including a Mod/Copy pair to play with directly? Just L$75. A ridiculous price. How Guy Nishii does it, I do not know, but however he’s managing it, I hope he continues.
