Shapes, photography and fashion reviews by Ran Garrigus and Freyja Nemeth. This blog has been replaced by the Otherworldly blog.
LivejournalAs Freyja hinted, I’ve my own Ugly Duck review to share, this time of one of Fade Lei’s new male skins: Gabriel. There are four tones available, with the lightest being more of a gothy RP-aimed skin, but the other three—Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael—provide some excellent variations. And it turns out, those variations go along with a very handsome, 100% hand-drawn skin.

This skin took a bit of time to grow on me in demo form, but as you can see, it really did in the end. Gabriel is the next lightest tone of Ugly Duck’s male skins (Lucifer is lighter, but has no light brow variant,, and tends more to a goth kind of look), and it’s an excellent example of hand-drawn skins in SL—a dying breed, as photosourcing has become increasingly predominant. The hand drawn look provides some definite benefits, such as being able to get a level of “smoothness” to the skin that doesn’t look right when too many details are photosourced. The down side, on the other hand, can be that some areas might seem a little sketchy—the back of the skin is not my favorite out there, for example. There’s very slight seaming here and there, most noticeably in the waist and ankles, but you really have to be looking for them.
But really, the body on a whole is pretty good, especially as the physique is not quite so muscle-bound as many skins. What really sells the skin for me, however, is the face. It’s beautifully shaded around the cheeks and the eyes. There are eye options which provide a bit of shadow if you’d like, which I think works very well just to suggest something a bit ... darker. The lip shape is excellent, and the color is quite lush. The detail could be a little sharper in that area, I suppose, but really, I like it fine. I’d say the skin would suit vampires pretty well, all considered. ;) As far as options go, you select between either light or dark brows. After that, you get ten skins with that brow, with freckles, eye shadow (very light and subtle) and 5 o’clock shadow options. All for just L$1000, which is quite the deal. On the other hand, no hair base, and he’s definitely a waxer—entirely devoid of pubic hair, but you can always add that on on an underwear later if it matters.
If you’re looking for something a bit different in skins, Ugly Duck’s definitely the place to look whether you’re interested in male or female skins. The hand drawn look isn’t typical these days, but when it’s done well, it’s certainly appealing!
