A Beauty From the Abyss

Ever since Ran could afford his first Scorpio skin, Abyss skins have been among our favourite male skins in SL. I still find the Scorpio very attractive on the shapes he has made for it (I think he really manages to make them his own, despite how common they’ve ended up being), though admittedly it does come in behind the newer male Abyss skins these days. The Dave Gears, in particular, is just amazing. The Adam Crius is also very good, but alas, he hasn’t bought that one yet because he is waiting for a darker tone that creator Khai Sinister mentioned having plans for. I hope it shows up soon, because I’ve got some thoroughly indecent pictures in mind…

But, this is not about the male Abyss skins, no matter how much I might drool over them. Its about the fact that although I have always loved the male skins, the female skins have not really grabbed me before. They’ve been well made and quite pretty, but not quite my thing. And then the new female skins started coming out. First Somber Mourning, then Ama Garijus and now Kass Calypto.

Style Notes & Slurls

Skin: Kass Calypto Dark Olive Liner by The Abyss
Hair: Ash Jet by Analog Dog
Accessories: Henna Secret by Huz Tats

What immediately grabbed my attention about Kass was the tones. She’s offered in three tones—light, olive and dark olive—and it was the final one that caught my eye. A good olive tone is not easy to make, and this one looks fabulous. Its rich, dark and sultry, without being a fake, orangey tan or having weird saturation issues. Overall, I find that the skin tones from the Abyss, especially on the new lines of male and female skins, are very attractive and realistic.

Of course, there’s more to Kass than just the tone. Her body is beautifully shaded, for a softly toned, feminine look that has just the right amount of detail and contrast. The skin grain, in particular, is excellent. The breasts are really lovely, with nice, dark nipples, and the bottom is quite nicely rounded. Maybe a tiny bit too pert for my tastes, but very nicely done. On the whole, there really isn’t anything about the body that I dislike, except for one thing which I will come back to a little later: the lack of options.

The face, of course, is the selling point of a skin for most people, and Kass has a lovely face. I am particularly keen on the cheek shading and on the lips, which work so beautifully with a smaller mouth, but the whole face really has lovely character and a great idealized realistic look. The dark, quite strong brows definitely suit my tastes. The only slight quibble would be the nose, which seems a little fiddly to work with, though I am fairly pleased with the result I managed to achieve in the end.

However, those looking for a wide variety of makeups will probably find Kass lacking. The four options consist of one clean face and three with dirt or various cuts and bandaids, plus each of the four options can be had with or without a liner. This is very much a roleplay skin rather than a fashionista skin. However, I don’t mind a mostly natural skin now and then, and this skin doesn’t need tons of makeup to look striking.

I would, however, have liked to see more options in other ways. Each Kass option costs L$ 1400 and includes the chosen face with and without a hairbase, as well as a pair of lashes. Compared to the options included with most female skins these days, it is a little limiting and a little pricey, even though the quality is undeniable high. I would have liked to see an option for “corset” or “push up” cleavage included (or even sold separately on an undershirt), and I think some people might have liked to see pubic hair included, at least on a clothing layer.

The gorgeous henna tattoos on the first two full-body shots I picked up yesterday at the sale at Huz Tats. The front of the body shows the full-strength version of the tattoo, whereas the back shows the faded version. The pack also includes matching black versions, and you get the tattoos on all possible layers. Its intricate and beautifully executed, and while regular tattoos don’t interest me so much I am quite drawn to henna tattoos. I henna my hair in RL, and I have occasionally pondered trying my hand at some henna designs, instead of just making my hands bright orange each time I do my hair. ;P It really looks very pretty on skin, especially a nice dark tone like this one. I would definitely recommend checking out both the new Abyss skin and the sale at Huz Tats.
