Shapes, photography and fashion reviews by Ran Garrigus and Freyja Nemeth. This blog has been replaced by the Otherworldly blog.
LivejournalBefore I launch into today’s reviewing (belatedly, but I’ve run around like a headless chicken most of the day), I thought I’d be a little selfish and make a late Christmas wishlist (it works as a wishlist for the new year, too) for things I’d love to get my little hands on in SL.
1) Sometimes it seems like no matter how many makeups one has, there isn’t one that is just right for ones current mood. Right now I want metals, for both eyes and lips (but not necessarily at the same time). Not bright metals, but slightly tarnished ones, with a bit of patina on. Gold and silver you see now and then, but bronze and copper are pretty rare. And if these colours are used in Middle-Eastern-influenced makeups, even better.
2) I love jewellery, and I particularly love period (or period-inspired) and fantasy jewellery. The latter is fairly easy to find, and of great quality too, but I don’t know of a lot of places that specialize in pieces inspired by period jewellery, for example Medieval, Viking or Roman jewellery.
3) When it comes to period-inspired clothing, there are some great pieces around for women (though more is most welcome, especially Medieval and older), but there really needs to be more stuff for guys so I get to see Ran dressed up too.
If anyone else wants to chime in with their wishlists, please do. And with that, time to have a look at some lovely red outfits and some fabulous gift skins.
Skin: Kalista Light Group Gift by Tuli
Hair: Bonita Black by ETD
Oufit: Maida Blood by Silent Sparrow
Boots: Rodeo Maroon by Adam n Eve
The latest release from Silent Sparrow is the slightly burlesque Maida outfit. My inventory is overflowing with red (and black, of course), but that did not stop me from getting this one in the blood colour. Its just so right for this outfit. I really like the open bustle skirt and all the little touches, and as always with Silent Sparrow, the patterning is gorgeous, with little details revealed as you zoom in.
The whole outfit contains quite a few more pieces than what is shown here, and many of them on several layers, giving you great variety in the sort of looks you can create with it.

Here’s a slightly more risqué version, with the underbust corset worn alone and with the panties instead of the shorties. I do like those sort of options for any outfit, and I think it shows off the new Kalista skin from Tuli rather nicely. The makeup worn here is a group gift, but there are also 21 makeups to choose from in Tuli’s store, including a few others with decorative elements.
The look is finished off with the new Rodeo boots from Adam n Eve finally. I had been teased with pictures of them for a few days, and when they were released yesterday, I knew I had to wear the Maroon pair with this outfit. Like the last two releases from Damen Gorilla, these are AO-friendly boots that won’t break at the ankles no matter what sort of positions you get into. However, if you are a shortie (like me), you may need to edit their position to pull them up a little higher to avoid sinking into the floor a little.
Skin: Celebrity Sugar Christmas Green/Red by Cupcakes
Hair: Janette Black by ETD
Oufit: Holly Red by Cupcakes
Boots: Rodeo Moss by Adam n Eve
Another red outfit that I picked up yesterday was a recent release from Cupcakes, called Holly. It was given out as a group gift in a nice brown colour a while back, and I really liked how the shading was done. So, when Cupcakes added a store card system and announced a 15% off sale on cards (I believe this is still going on), I picked up a card and got myself a red Holly too. Now, it did prove to be a little tricky to edit to fit me, but that tends to be the case with skirts that attach to the pecs, and sometimes you just have to suffer through a bit of editing. I think it turned out pretty well, and I expect that most standard-size avatars won’t have any fit issues at all.
The boots are once again the Rodeo boots from Adam n Eve, here in Moss, and the skin is another group gift, this one fittingly enough from Cupcakes too. Its a Christmas makeup for their new Celebrity skin. I can’t say I have studied their other skins very closely, but I do think Celebrity looks like quite a big step forward. The face shading, in particular, is soft and glowy but not without some bold shading, which gives it an interesting character. I am definitely tempted to let a few more makeups slip into my inventory.
If you would like to get your hands on either of these skins (and hopefully some more makeups too, once you’ve sampled them), the Tuli and Cupcakes update groups still have them in their notices archives, though both groups do have an L$ 250 fee for joining. However, it is more than worth it considering the generous gifts given to these groups.
There were also two more gift skins given out today. One was given out in Skin Within’s subscribe-o-matic, and its a gorgeous preview of her next skin, to be released in January. The other is a special version of Adam n Eve’s Devon skin, given out as a pick reward. Devon is a freckled skin, great for redheads, and included in the pick reward is also a red-browed version of one of sachi’s male skins, Jared. Redhaired guys, yay.
