How Fair the Hair

Hair Fair’s upon us! The aggregators are aswarm with bloggers sharing their finds and favorites, as well as the trials and tribulations as lag and borkage rear their ugly heads. I can’t say I’m immune to the siren call of hair fair; there’s so many hair designers in SL that the chance to see a significant (but not complete) number of them in one place just can’t be passed up. As usual, I’ve kept an eye out for hairs that suit my avatars, whom you’ll as often as not find parading about in historical fashions and long, flowing locks. I hope to have more hairs to feature as the days wear on—I’ve already got a small backlog that should last me a couple more reviews—but I wanted to kick things off with the new male hair from Wasabi Pills.

Having been kindly granted early access as part of the Oldfashioned blog, I kept an eye out for stores that had the sort of hairs I tend to wear—longer hairstyles, especially those with a hint of the fantastic or historical. Wasabi Pills’s beautifully photoed vendor posters caught my eye immediately… but the hairs weren’t actually available!  Thanks to the kindness of MissAllSunday Lemon, proprietor of Wasabi Pills, I did manage to get a hold of the two male hairs, Andor and Hedeon, in the Jet hair color. With them, I paired up Bare Rose’s new Marquis B, a delicious sort of late 19th century gentleman’s suit that comes in three colors, with a truly magnificent collar with sculpted ruffles and cravat.

Wasabi Pills sells hairs in two-color packs for just L200, with resize scripts but also stil left moddable if you prefer manual resizing. The Andor hair shown above was particularly appealing, the vendor photo of a bloodied and beaten warrior putting me in mind of the great old sword and sorcery standbys, such as Conan the Barbarian. The headband even made me think of another fantasy character, al’Lan Mandragoran, from the Wheel of Time series by the late Robert Jordan. So .... yeah, I had to have it.

It’s a great style, a bit messy (as it would be after fighting off a band of trollocs or Zamoran cutthroats), with well-sculpted length of tail. There are no flexis to speak of, and I think it would have been interesting to perhaps incorporate a few at the tail and around the brow to give it a little motion as you move. I think it’s fairly tricky to get that right, however, and what MissAllSunday has done is make a hair that has a sense of being real without being over done.

The Hedeon hairstyle is quite a different beast, full of flexi goodness. It’s got a wonderful flow to it, as you can perhaps guess from the image taken from behind where I managed to catch it as I whipped around mid-pose. It’s a more modern hairstyle, certainly, what with the soft, grey bandana holding it back. One benefit—and I wouldn’t put it past MissAllSunday to have done this on purpose—of the nice textured grey is that it tints beautifully through a wide shade of colors. Edit linked parts, switch to the texture tab when you’ve just the bandana selected,  click the Color swatch, and voila!

Now, this is a quite dead straight style, which for me is an acquired taste—I prefer waves and curls in my longer hair—but I think this could look smashing with a wide variety of looks. I’m already considering sticking it with one of my Asian avatars, and perhaps taking a cue from the biker on the vendor poster…

MissAllSunday Lemon has a score of haircolors to play with now available at her booth, which you can hopefully find with the help of this SLURL. Even if the hairstyles aren’t quite your thing, you can admire the vendor posters, which have a lovely photographic style to them that makes them evocative and appealing. Good luck with the lag, and more Hair Fair 2009 reviews soon!
