One of the on-going benefits of the recent efforts to promote contacts between fashion bloggers and content creators has been the opportunity for bloggers and creators to chat, share knowledge and information, and more easily find outlets for getting the word out about some of the excellent creations currently being produced in SL. Thanks to a note in the SL Bloggers Network founded by Voshie Paine, I contacted Rogan Diesel of the hot new pose and animation store, Diesel Works, to inquire about his products. He kindly dropped his latest creation, the Diesel Works Hammock, for me to check out. The images that follow will be a first for Oldfashioned, taken on location rather than at our studio so as to better show how well-suited it is to tropical locations; be sure to click through the images to see them in full size.

Perfectly timed for the summer, this hammock is really quite wonderful. It’s also quite large in terms of the total space taken up by it goes, so be sure to have a roomy place to hang out. Having recently used Cocos Island, a beautiful tropical sim funded by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, for an advertisment assignment, I knew it’d be perfect for featuring the hammock as well thanks to its great beaches and the fact that building and script permissions are on.
The hammock package, priced at L$899, includes the hammock Freyja and I are using with its eight couple poses (with more to come) and texture-change pillows and towels, plus the lovely sculpted trees with flexi leaves and shadow prims and a pair of rope ties to set around the trees to complete the illusion of a strung-up hammock. The package also includes a pair of basic poles that are already nicely aligned, to make it easier to get the hammock strung up and looking appropriate. A bit of basic aligning knowledge is needed, but it should be a piece of cake for any resident with just a bit of time.

Rogan’s vendor notes that the hammock will be upgraded in the future with additional poses, which makes it quite the bargain. The two pillows at one end of the hammock are the male and female pillows respectively, and can be textures-changed with a script; presently the touch on the male pillow also triggers the animation menu, which can be a minor nuisance as you get two different menus at once, but Rogan is working on improving that. There’s a wide range of textures for all three pillows on the hammock (the third is not a poseball—three would definitely be a crowd!), as well as a range of textures for the towel underneath.

What really makes or breaks a product like this is not its appearance (although it doesn’t hurt that this is nicely constructed), but the animations that comes with it. In this, Diesel Works’s creator has shown he really knows what he’s doing. It’s hard for me to convey precisely what it is about these couple animations that impressed me, but impress me they did. It’s in the little details, I think—the tilt of a head to give a sidelong glance, the casual slide of an arm over a back, the swing of a leg—that conveys a truly relaxed sense of coziness. Each and every animation is custom-made by Rogan Diesel for the hammock, and they just fit perfectly… in a thematic sense, anyways. As with all poses, variations in avatar sizes can cause small glitches, but the hammock has position adjustment built in so you can tweak how the avatars fit until its perfect.
Diesel Works has certainly received some attention of late, thanks to the quality of Rogan’s animations and poses. There’s a growing collection of poses, some animated stands and the like, and a choice collection of furniture like the new hammock. It’s certainly worth paying a visit, if you’re trying to decorate that tropical hideaway to spruce it up for your partner, or if you’d like to expand your repetoire of poses and animations.
