Whippet-like Curiosity

First, a public service announcement. At least one of the stores featured in my review today is participating in the Make Him Over hunt for men. Personally, I am all hunted out, but I’ll have to give it a try as it’ll certainly feature designers I’ve never seen or heard of before, and that’s always good. But on to the review…

Today was rather fun. First I saw an announcement that a shop I had never heard of, Curiosity, had a stall at KMADD City. I went over to take a look and saw a small but interesting selection of shirts and jackets. The blazer was just the sort of thing I had been looking for in SL without really coming across one that fit my exact needs. The rolled up sleeves (coming in two variations, shown in the pictures) proved a bit difficult to fit perfectly, not so much because of the resize scripting but because of the shape and positioning didn’t want to work too well with animations. That said, I do love the first set of sleeve prims on the left, as it’s an interesting and realistic shape that just looks terrific. With blazer in hand, I had to decide what else to put together with it for this review. I remembered this gorgeous sculpt-and-flexi pashmina from Zaara, so that had to go into the mix.

The eyes and lashes from Miriel were no-brainers, because alas, Miriel Enfield is going to be closing down her shop and gorgeous sim in the next few weeks. This saddens me because she’s created some great and very affordable jewelry, some of the prettiest eyes in Second Life, and a truly stunning sim that you must visit before its gone. Showing some of the beautiful work she’s done is the least I could do. Then the Loran hair, a recent acquisition from Uncle Web to go with the handsome Tristan skin and sharp M110 shoes from Adam n Eve… but pants? What do I do about pants?

Fiirst I thought I had a shirt I could wear with the blazer, but when I investigated to see whether the store that made it was still around, I couldn’t find them (if anyone knows if Fuse still has a location in SL, let me know). Instead, I found Whippet & Buck on the Imogen sim, and a cursory look at Google Blogs suggests that while they’ve had some great bloggage for their fun, colorful women’s clothes, no one has really made much note of their male clothing yet. Suddenly, I had pants, because frankly I just don’t have enough slacks in my wardrobe (alas, one pair that I thought of wearing also came from a defunct store). Designers? More slacks and casual dress pants please!

Shorts: Harris Tartan Shorts Ivory by Whippet & Buck
Belt: Harris Shorts Belt Alabaster-Black by Whippet & Buck

You glimpsed the shirt in the previous photo, but I decided that since I went on a small spree buying clothes from Whippet & Buck, a better look was worth it. Rooster’s a store I came across when I first visited the atmospheric, trendy TRILOGY sim. The rainfall is such a great touch, and it really makes me think of visiting some fashionable shopping district in London, wandering a side street to find exclusive boutiques. Rooster has excellent clothing with a nice range of colors, and I have to say the prices are largely very competitive. I think I bought this polo more than a year ago, so a fresh visit was a good idea. The designer, Ajika Laszlo, has been making use of sculpts of late, and has some new releases that are worth checking out.

But on to the Whippet & Buck. Besides the casual dress pants, there’s a good variety of sweaters ... and then some terrific shorts. I often wear shorts just like these in the summer months, so I just had to have them. Besides the solid color shorts as shown here, there’s also some rather appealing tartan shorts. I tend not to go for tartan ... except, well, when I do (so yes, I bought a pair; perhaps I’ll feature them for something in the future). One of the most interest things about these shorts is that there are separate belts sold in a dizzying array of color combinations (there must be two dozen, at least) which can be worn to fit any of the shorts. The shorts are sold on both underwear and pant layers, and with and without integral belts. In fact, they also come with two sizes of moddable prim hems, not shown here (because I forgot to put them on) which add a bit more detail and a sense of volume to the shorts—impressive, what with it all being just L$160, and the add-on belts are a mere L$25 apiece. If there’s anything I could complain about, is that there are no fat packs, because with a small discount I would have been willing to buy the whole lot of belts and perhaps even shorts.

To top it off—or perhaps to give it a solid foundation—I decided to slip back into Damen Gorilla’s most excellent M112 shoes. They’re reviewed elsewhere, but suffice to say they’re a brilliant set of shoes.

For those wondering, Whippet & Buck is the one store I can confirm will be taking part in the Make Him Over hunt. I definitely recommend paying them a visit, because the hand-drawn clothing is excellent. For that matter, make sure to visit all the other stores featured in this review, if you haven’t already. There’s something for everyone at these stores, I think, and designers of male fashion, skin, and hairs could always use support.
