Handsome Dernier Cri

In recent months, Dernier Cri has been getting some attention. Asuka Martin, the proprietor, had the reputation of being one of the top Teen Grid designers and her entry into the Main Grid received significant attention when she opened her store. I can’t speak to the hair and clothing she offers, other than to say that it looks good, but I can comment on her first male skin after having purchased it.

Style Notes

Skin: Cole Coffee (Dark Eyes) by Dernier Cri
Hair: Marquis Black by Adam n Eve
Outfit: Moderno Underwear (boycut) by Moderno (no longer available)

This full body shot shows the excellent degree of detailing that’s gone into the skin. There’s just the right amount of shading at the collar and elbows, and the chest is muscular without being over done. However, the abdomen does strike me as being a little problematic, but I’ll get to that later.

If I have any concern at all with the back of the skin, it’s that the texturing looks just a little bit splotchier than what I’m used to. I’m not sure if this is an artefact of photosourcing or painting by hand (and either applying a noise filter of some sort, or perhaps liberally using texturing brushes), but while it works fine at a distance (and indeed helps gives a sense of real skin to it, with pores and little blemishes and all), getting too close ... to be honest, close up my lad’s rear looks like there’s a bit of cellulite. Now, I don’t spend much time at all zooming in on my avatar’s butt (or, for that matter, naked), so it’s not even close to a deal-breaker for me, but perhaps others feel differently.

The remarks about the backside hold a little bit for the front as well, in regards to the texturing. This image, which is closer up, strikes me as showing the somewhat distinctly rough texturing pretty well. A larger concern for me, however, are the abs. You can’t quite see it here, but if you were to look at the abdominal area straight on, you would get the sense that it actually curves somewhat to your left. I believe this is not, in fact, the case; instead, it seems to me that somewhat asymmetric shading on the right side of the linea alba (that’s the midline) creates the illusion of a curvature. If one looks at the avatar from an angle, the illusion disappears and all is well—it’s a handsome six-pack, with perhaps a somewhat too perfectly round belly button.

The other negative I’d draw attention to is the fact that the hands lack detail to me. The nails are barely there, as you can see in the picture. Personally, I don’t care, because the face on this skin is just that good. From the brows to the nose to the lips and ears, the Cole is just wonderful. Where the texturing on other parts of the skin looks a bit rough, here it’s just the right amount to suggest masculinity and the way men’s faces aren’t quite smooth. This skin uses the Dark Eyes option, which is a nice touch—instead of full blown eyeliner (which is also an option), it just adds a subtle amount of darkness that make the eyes pop out just a bit more. There’s a good range of facial hair options as well.

Personally, despite the issues I’ve noted, I think this is a great first entry from Dernier Cri. There’s another skin I was waiting to see released for a couple of months, which I thought would suit this particular avatar of mine very well . . . but when it came out, something just didn’t click for me—the face was too smooth, even though all the body details were just fine. I supposed I’d be waiting a few more months for someone to release just the right skin for it, and it was a very pleasant surprise indeed to see the Cole skin come out. Despite my quibbles concerning the body details, the most important thing for me is the face, and in that Dernier Cri has a winner. Especially given the price, L$900 for a skin, which is very reasonable for a male skin of this quality. I’m definitely looking forward to Dernier Cri’s future releases for men, because the potential is very high.
